Tai-mah and Kanasoon

Akachan's great grandmother will be staying with us for a week or so and Akachan is getting more familiar with her after overcoming his initial shyness. In fact they are hitting off rather well.

As Good As New

Today I collected my beloved car from the workshop... for the second time within 10 days.

Damm! (sorry for my languange, couldn't help it). My poor car was reared ended for the second time, by a Taxi, only 5 days after a new boot was fitted courtesy from the insurer of the lorry that rear ended my car in a wet November morning.

Well, it was a blessing that for both times, Akachan, Sarah and Susan were not in my car when it got hit rather violently, and it was also a blessing that no one was hurt in both accidents (except for my poor Sunny).

And for both times, I was blessed with brand new cars as replacement, courtesy from the workshop, eventually a courtesy by the insurer of both vehicles that rear ended my car I guess.

Now my car is as good as new! For the rear end at least.

With love, From Hong Kong

When Akachan's Ah Gong, Ah Mah and Aunty Susan went to Hong Kong for a short holiday trip in November, they brought back lots of lots of gifts. Many of them were bought by Akachan's GrandAunty Amanda (yesss...the sweet young grandaunty) who is now residing in Hong Kong together with Zeke and Wilfred.

I managed to snapped a couple of pictures on the lovely baby shoes for Akachan... and probably post the rest at a later time.

Akachan has been wearing the lovely yellow Croc everyday but doesn't really seem to show much interest in the cute Spidy's shoes. And Mummy has decided to keep the Puma for the coming Chinese New Year together with some of the beautiful clothes. Akachan, you will have to wait for another month or so before you get to wear them.

Vacination for Akachan

Come this Wednesday, Akachan will get his MMR and Chicken Pox vaccination. I think my brave little boy will do well too, just like the few other injections previously. The last time he had the needle poked into his tender thigh, he burst out with tears but quickly squeezed a smile after the nurses handed him a "toy" (empty bottle with tablets inside).

This coming vaccination was supposedly to have been done 2 weeks ago. However Akachan caught a cold, fell sick with fever and running nose after I brought him to the swimming pool. Dr Chua advised to push back his vaccination for 2 weeks until he has fuly recovered.

Akachan is recovering well and we did not notice any runny nose since last weekend. He should do fine on Wednesday. We have taken half a day leave to bring him to KK. Ah mah has also prepared barley water and make sure he drinks plenty so that it could help prevent fever after the injection.

Part 2: Our First Family Portrait

Remember I posted Our First Family Portrait a few weeks ago?

Sarah mentioned that the cute pictures of Akachan are not very clear as I have merely taken a quick snap shot of the messily laid out pictures on the floor. I took a look and have to agree that the picture quality is pretty bad.

Ok to make it up, I will post the individual pictures again.

There you go.

Morning Hour Rush

Every morning we are always in a rush in order to send Akachan to my mother's home and then get to our offices on time.

Usually we will try to get ourselves ready before Akachan wakes up. However, it will be quite a juggle when Akachan wakes up earlier or at the same time as us. We will need to take turn to go to the washroom, eat breakfast and have a shower. One of us will have to watch over Akachan as he refuses to stay in the playpen. Sarah and I have sync up the morning procedures almost to a perfection where, while she is in the bathroom, Akachan will have his milk and I will watch over and change his diapers. When Sarah is done, she will do her make up and watch over Akachan while I go on my daily morning routine. After which I will take over from Sarah and get changed at the same time, while Sarah goes about finishing up her chores.

We will then rush Akachan to my mother's home which is about 10 minutes drive away and after which we head towards the BKE and PIE joining the notorious morning traffic jam.

Before we are ready to get out of the house, as a precaution we will always line up all our barang barang we need for the day near the door, in case we leave anything behind while in a hurry.

Tanya, Kar-Ee and Akachan

We met up with Bock, Yeng Fang, Tanya and Kar-Ee at Paragon Toy 'R' Us on Saturday afternoon. They were there go get some toys for the kids and also because Bock always wanted to get a nice big toy for Akachan.

Akachan happily "waddled" around the heaps of toys together with Tanya and Kar-Ee, grabbing and touching everything he can find along his way. He almost tumbled over a few times with the children and adults rushing to his rescue, caught him in the nick of time, and then see him smiling and tapping his own chest(Akachan's gesture for frigthened or "scared scared").

Vroomm!! Akachan Found The Accelerator On His Ride-on Jeep

Last Thursday I took leave and stayed at home with Akachan as Grandma had to visit the doctor for her routine checkup. Sarah was not able to take leave as she had some important tasks to attend to on that day.

I was having fun with Akachan "touring" around the apartment in his Ride-on Jeep. Well actually the only person having fun was Akachan as I was pushing his jeep from behind. I stopped to take some pictures and video of this cute and chubby baby when, suddenly Akachan discovered the use of the accelarator. And "Eeeek" he screamed in joy... and "Vrooomm, vroom, bang...".

Check out the video, have fun too.

Our first Family Portrait

Meeting up with Feng Jie

Feng Jie, our confinement lady visted us on 9 Sep Sunday(ok i know that was about 2 weeks ago, I was rather occupied during this period...). We arranged that I pick her up from her work place at Quintet.

I arrived at the apartment at about 4pm in the afternoon. I wasn't sure if I was waiting at the correct lobby until I heard Feng Jie's boomy voice bidding farewell and giving reminders regarding the care of the baby to the family she lived with for the last 4 weeks. 5 minutes later she appeared at the lobby, beaming and looking much better then we last seen her. Well she has put on some weight probably eating better after she has gotten her dentures...kekeke.

Drove her back to our home and we were all very happy to see her again after more than 1 year. But well, not surprising that akachan was not able to recognize her and wouldn't let her carry him. We chatted and updated each other just like old friends who have not meet in a year.

She told us that she was booked until Jul next year and if we were to have another baby, we will need to cntact her really really early. What a hot babe she has become! We joked.

We chatted for another hour or so before we proceed to Ya Kun at Lot1 Shopping Mall for a cuppa. At about 6pm we drove her to Khatib where her son is staying.

She promised to visit again after her next job. She is a wonderful confinement lady and as friend as well. Till we meet again.

Akachan The Commander

Akachan has become the great commander in our household. What ever he wants or where ever he wants to go to, he will simply point with his little finger and say "Ooo Ooo Ooo". And his wish is our command.

For example, if Akachan feels like getting out of the house, he will cling on to whoever he has access to, point his little index finger to the stroller and pull him towards the stroller. Once he is at his stroller, he will again redirect his little index finger to point to the door. Bring him to the door (without the stroller)and and he will point back to the stroller, getting a little bit agitated. Bring him back to towards the stroller an he will yell and point to the door.

Well, his intention is quite obvious isn't it?

Feng Jie, our confinement lady

Two nights ago, I was pleasantly suprised to receive a phone call from Feng Jie, our confinement lady whom looked after Sarah and Akachan so well during the confinement period. She told us she is now at another family with a new born, very near to our home and would like to visit us when her job is done. We were so happy to hear from her and immediate told her that I will pick up up from her work place, come over to our place to see Akachan and perhaps go for dinner.

We were fortunate to have Feng Jie during Sarah's confinement period. It was a difficult time, we wouldn't have been able to cope if not for Feng Jie. She has more than 20 years of experiences as a confinement lady. Besides taking care of Sarah's confinement needs liking cooking confinement food, preparing special bath concoction, she took very good care our our new born baby as well. At night, she slept with Akachan in the nusery room, and will bring him to our room when Akachan is hungry. Akachan grew very much attached to her even she was only here for 28 days.

Feng Jie playing with Akachan.

Feng Jie is a very easy going person and did not mind helping out with some of the household chores. She vacummed or mopped the floor daily although we have a part-time domestic helper that will cleanup the house on Saturdays. She helped me with my laundry when she is not obligated to so. Whenever she cook for Sarah and herself, she would also prepare my share and will urged me to come home for "home cooked meals". This is not what I have heard of other confinement ladies. I really appreciated her helpfullness.

Feng Jie will always invite our visiting families members to stay for lunch or dinner and she doesn't mind doing extra cooking for them. They loved her chicken rice so much that they always asked her to cook chicken rice whenever she invited them to stay for meals. Come to think of that, I really missed her chicken rice.

Nonetheless, there are some "wear and tear" with the kitchen utensils, stove and sink, furnitures, etc. But what else is more important than having someone who is honest, hardworking, and sincere looking after my wife and baby at the most wanting period.

To simply put it, we are blessed to have her. How she ended up becoming our confinement lady is also another long story. Besides paying her her full salary, we gave her a handsome Ang Pow as a bonus and also to offset her (exhorbitant) agency fees. On top of that, our families also gave her Ang Pows to show their appreciation.

So Akachan, in 2 weeks time you will get to meet Feng Jie, who bathed you, fed you every other hours, changed your diapers, cuddled you, put you to bed, took care and cooked goodies for mummy, when you were just born. She is the first few people that you met immediately when you come into this world. Will you still be able to recognise her?

Feng Jie wanted a photo with Akachan, this is the picture we took and developed for her.

Perfect Birthday Party

It was a perfect birthday for Akachan. Although it was raining during the afternoon, the sky cleared up towards the evening. In fact the weather was good, cooling with occasional breeze, perfect for a outdoor BBQ party!

We arrived at Bullion Park Condominium, the place for the BBQ party, at about 6pm and waited for the BBQ food caterer to arrive. Meanwhile, my brother Tristan brought Akachan to the poolside and let him waddle his feet in the water. Akachan was having a great time, he liked playing water so much that he practically allowed everyone to carry him as long as the person mentioned "pong pong" and bring him to the pool. He enjoyed so much that he refused to be carried away from the water, struggling and yelling each time. We had intended to let Akachan swim on this day. His swimming suit was prepared and we also bought him a baby float. However the evening was chilly and was not suitable for him to have the dip, so Akachan will have to make do waddling at the side of the pool.

Sarah's parents, sister Yeng Fang, Bock Eng, Kar-Ee and Tanya were here to join in the fun too.

When the food finally arived, everyone were hungry like wolves. The BBQ fire took a while to be started so everyone helped themselves to the cook food. It would really be a perfect party if not for the fried rice, which my father-in-law discovered it had turned foul. Ok this will be the first and last time I'll order from this caterer eventhough the BBQ food wasn't too bad.

Akachan with his birthday cake.

It was time to bring out the birthday cake, we let Akachan stood on a chair in front of the table with the cake. Everyone surrounded him and he instantly became the star of the night, the center of attraction. We started to sing the birthday song and clapped our hands to the beat. The group of ladies and gentlemen at the neighbouring BBQ pit joined in the singing as well. Gosh, Akachan was really excited and started waving and clapping his hands. I blew off the candle on his behalf (accidental actually).

Akachan cutting his birthday cake.

Although Akachan was still too young to eat a cake, I held his little index finger and dipped it into the yummy cream and put it in his mouth. Boy you should look at his expression. He learnt fast, the next moment, his fingers were full of cream. And yes, the cake from Prima Deli was delicious!

and looks delicious.

Today's Akachan Birthday Bash

Its Akachan's birthday bash today and the weather does not look too good for a outdoor BBQ party. Hopefully it will stay cloudy and cool, and does not rain.

We got everything ready. Ordered the BBQ food and related stuff online. We also order a cute 3 kg Circus Train cake from Prima Deli. All set to go and let's pray hard that the weather will stay just fine.

Now its time to bathe and change Akachan, and get him ready for his first birthday bash.

Akachan's Birthday Wishlist

Akachan will be celebrating his first birthday this coming Saturday although his actual birthday is in mid August. We will be holding it at grand aunty Amanda's place (remember the sweet young thing? - see here). As we are supposed to have a family gathering there before grand aunty Amanda leaves for Hong Kong, we thought it will be a good idea to celebrate it on the same day since the whole family will be there. Furthermore, grand aunty Amanda will be leaving early August and she wouldn't be able to make it to Akachan's birthday. We will definitely miss aunty Amanda and we have promised to visit her in Hong Kong together with Akachan next year.

Nice hair cut

Akachan's hair is too long and I brought him to Derrick (our usual hairdressor) for a quick hair cut yesterday. We decided to cut his hair a little shorter this time so we do not have to trim his hair too often. Poor Akachan yelled, screamed and cried in my arms throughout the whole ordeal, causing obvious stress to Derrick and his wife. Luckily amidst the crying and yelling, Akachan did not struggle too hard and we were through in about 15 minutes. Amazingly, Akachan stop crying immediately after that. And me, I was perspiring and covered with Akachan's fine and ticklish hair.

Washing machine back in action

Finally, our washing machine is back in action. Our 3 year old washing machine stopped working last Friday evening and we could not get it fixed because the service center was close on Saturday. Service is never available when we need it most aren't they?

Called the service center on the next working day and got a service apppointment on Thurday, between 12pm to 3 pm. What a time! Who's going to be at home waiting for the repairman...and what if the repairman comes at 3pm and takes 2 hours to get it fixed? I do not really have a choice.

So at about 11.50am this morning, I got a surprise call from the repairman telling me that he will be at my place at 12pm. Surprised, because I do not expected him to come anytime earlier than 1 pm. Serviceman they are never never on time and we learn it the hard way. But I was wrong this time. I have only 10 minutes to get home from my office. Rushed to the car and slammed on the accelerator. Nope I did not speed, I am a safe driver, especially after we have Akachan.

Reached home at 12.05pm and the repairman was waiting at the door. We exchanged greetings and I brought him the the washing machine. I noticed he carried with him only a small toolbox and a small carton, probably spare parts. He appeared to know exactly what was the fault, took out the control panel and replace it with a new one in the carton. Turn on the power switch and viola!

And the bill...$181.9
$40 for service
$130 for the new control panel
plus 7% GST.

Time taken is 10 minutes.

New toy!

The Great Singapore Sale is on going and last Friday evening, Sarah and I decided to drop by Robinsons Centre Point to grab a couple of items and probably some toys for Akachan.

We saw that the PlaySkool "Walk & Ride" baby cart was on offer and this was something we wanted to get for Akachan but waiting for it to go on sale. It was really nice as Akachan could sit on it and it could also be easily converted to a push and walk cart. Its bright and colorful and comes with all the usual baby rattling stuff. So we were very sure Akachan is going to like it. The nice thing is we pay using Robinson Vouchers without using any cash. The vouchers were part of the new born gifts we received when Akachan was born.

The most wonderful thing is that Akachan loves it.

Optimism

Today the local newspaper reported that the number of millionaires in Singapore increased by a whopping 21%. We are in a city with the fastest growing number of millionaires. Just too bad that I am still not part of this statistic. However, Akachan, we are not too far behind. There are 66 thousands millionaires reported in Singapore, out of the 4.5 million population, that is 1 out of 68 Singaporean is a millionaire. Base on statistics, I have only 67 more persons to catch up with at the most. Thats not to many isn't it? So you got to understand why I have to work hard and work late many times... it is not that I did not want to keep you company and play with you... its only 67 persons away... but I can assure you that you are always on my mind.

Rich Dad Poor Dad

During lunch, a few of my colleages and I were chatting casually about some rich tycoons in Singapore and how some of them made their fortune by making the right choice of marrying a rich man's daughter. Suddenly, one of my colleages mentioned that he once heard someone say that, "If you father is not rich, it is not your fault. But if your father-in-law is not rich, its definitely your fault!". Although it was meant to be a joke, we can't help but laught and agree with that. And almost all simultaneously let out a big sigh...

So Akachan, please remember that:-

It is not your fault when your father is not rich.
It is definitely your fault if your father-in-law is not!

Toy Giraffe

Among Akachan's toys, there is one that I find particularly interesting. It is a wooden rack with a picture of a giraffe painted on it. Akachan likes it alot too. The giraffe ia a hand-me-down from Akachan's grandauntie's son Zeke. Haha sound complicated? Ok Zeke is my aunt's son, ie, my cousin. Getting it now?

I find that this is a very good toy as it helps to train Akachan's finer motor skills. He needs to pick up rollers from the bottom of the rack, place it accurately either through the mouth of the giraffe or directly on the top level of the rack, and allow the roller to roll down the different levels of the rack. The rollers will spin colorful patterns while rolling down the rack. Akachan is very excited whenever he manages to place a roller onto the top level and watches the roller roll down. He will clap his hands and yell loudly, and will look around to see if everybody elses is clapping with him.

Akachan placing the roller onto the giraffe... with Ah Gong's help...

By the way, this is Akachan's grand auntie holding him when he is 1 month old...Grandauntie?! Can't believe right? this sweet young thing is Akachan's grandauntie!

We got the bug from Akachan

Akachan is recovering well. His appetite has improved and is becoming as playfull as he used to be. But now, I think Sarah and I has got the bug from Akachan. Both of us share the same symptom as Akachan, cough, sore throat, runny nose and slight fever.

Looking after Akachan is tough, thank goodness I have my parent helping us look after Akachan during the day. Some friends ever asked me if I have any regrets, sacrificing my freedom and time for a kid. Yes its tough, its tiring, back breaking and hair whitening, any regrets? No not at all, I would do it all over again. Just look at his smiles...

Akachan is recovering

Akachan is much better now as compared to a few days back. The past few days and nights were difficult because Akachan was feeling extremely uncomfortable.

We brought Akachan to Kinder Clinic located at Paragon level 7 last Monday morning. Sarah called early for an appointement but the staff advised us to walk in as Dr Siva will be doing doing his rounds after lunch. We arrived at the clinic at about 11am and the clinic is crowded as usual.

Dr Siva's first question was "Anyone in the family sick?". Err...ok I had a short bout of sneezing and runny nose a few days back but I did not realised that it was so detrimental to Akachan. Dr Siva advised us that it will be 4 or 5 days before Akachan's cough and runny nose will go away, and to feed Akachan more frequently but lesser in quantity.

We collected Akachan's prescription and paid about $75 over dollars for the consultation. It was a little cheaper than the Children's Private Clinic at KKH which we usually pay about $80 over dollars. I also gotta mention that reently KKH Children's A&E charges had increase from $65 to $75. We had lunch at my favorite DOME Cafe, grab a couple of items from Takashimaya, before we headed home.

Akachan is sick

Akachan is not feeling well. He is having a bad cough and runny nose. Last night he threw up everything after his nightly feed and cough syrup given by Dr Siva. The bed was messed up, including our comforter, Sarah's pillow and the floor as well. Akachan seemed to know that he nade a mess and was quite upset. We tried to console and comfort him, and assure him that its ok, its not his fault.

Akachan fell asleep after we cleaned up the mess.

He was touchy and irritable whole of today. If he is still not well tomorrow morning I will need to take leave and bring him to Dr Siva or KK Children's Clinic.
